Swamp Cooler or Refrigerated Air? A Santa Fe Homeowner's Guide
Two Very Different Ways to Beat the Heat
Santa Fe sits above 7,000 feet in some of the driest air in the country, and for decades the swamp cooler has been the default way to get through a high-desert summer. But more homeowners are asking whether it's finally time to switch to refrigerated air — central AC or a ductless mini-split — instead.
There's no single right answer. The best choice depends on your home, your budget, and how you feel about humidity, water use, and that muggy stretch of monsoon season. Here's an honest, side-by-side look so you can decide with confidence — and get a free estimate whenever you're ready.

The Swamp Cooler: Built for Bone-Dry Heat
An evaporative cooler pulls warm outside air through water-soaked pads and blows the cooled, moistened air into your home. In Santa Fe's famously dry climate, that evaporation does real work — a well-tuned swamp cooler can drop indoor temperatures noticeably while sipping electricity compared with refrigerated systems. They're inexpensive to run, add a little welcome humidity to painfully dry indoor air, and many older Santa Fe homes were built around them. The trade-offs: they use a fair amount of water, need seasonal cleaning and winterizing, and lose their edge on humid monsoon afternoons. If you want to keep the one you have running well, our evaporative cooler service team can tune, repair, or replace it.
"They ran through many different tests and were very thorough in their investigation of my problem. In no way did I feel ripped off or taken advantage of."

Refrigerated Air: Consistent Comfort, Any Humidity
Refrigerated air — whether central air conditioning or a ductless mini-split — uses refrigerant to actually pull heat and moisture out of your home rather than adding water to the air. That means steady, predictable comfort no matter what the humidity does, including during monsoon season when swamp coolers struggle. Modern systems also dehumidify, filter the air, and, in the case of heat-pump mini-splits, turn around and heat your home in winter. The trade-off is a higher upfront investment and somewhat higher energy use. We install refrigerated air and central AC as well as ductless mini-splits as a Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer and certified Trane provider.
"David was able to determine the most optimal placement for the units and pump. He gave a very fair quote and was able to schedule the install right away."

Upfront Cost
Evaporative coolers win on installation cost. They're a simpler system with fewer components, which is a big reason they became the Santa Fe standard in the first place.
Refrigerated air — central AC or a set of mini-splits — costs more to install, especially if a home has no existing ductwork. We'll give you exact numbers for your home in a free estimate before you decide anything.
Running Cost
Swamp coolers use far less electricity than refrigerated systems, but they consume water every hour they run — something worth weighing in a high-desert climate.
Refrigerated systems use more power and no water. Today's high-efficiency mini-splits have narrowed that energy gap considerably compared with older central units.
Comfort
A swamp cooler shines in dry heat but fades when humidity climbs during monsoon season, since it relies on dry air to work. On the muggiest afternoons it can feel like it's barely keeping up.
Refrigerated air holds a steady temperature and actively removes humidity, so your comfort doesn't rise and fall with the weather.
Maintenance
Swamp coolers need hands-on seasonal work: a spring startup, pad changes, water-line checks, and winterizing every fall to prevent freeze damage.
Refrigerated systems ask for less seasonal fuss — typically an annual tune-up to keep them running efficiently and under warranty.
Best For
A swamp cooler is a great fit if you want the lowest upfront cost and you're comfortable with seasonal upkeep during a mostly dry summer.
Refrigerated air makes sense if you want year-round, humidity-proof comfort, you're tired of swamp-cooler maintenance, or you'd like a mini-split that also heats your home in winter.
We had two mini-splits installed and removed our 20+ year old swamp cooler with David's help. He is excellent at communication and his work is incredibly precise and clean. We couldn't be happier, highly recommend!

Swamp Cooler vs. Refrigerated Air FAQ
In our dry climate, yes — for much of the summer a well-maintained evaporative cooler cools effectively and cheaply. The exception is monsoon season, roughly July into September, when higher humidity blunts its performance. If those muggy afternoons are your breaking point, refrigerated air is worth considering.
It depends on your priorities. If you want consistent comfort regardless of humidity, less seasonal upkeep, and equipment that can also heat your home with a mini-split, a conversion often pays off in day-to-day comfort. We'll walk your home and give you honest numbers before you commit to anything.
Not necessarily. Ductless mini-splits deliver refrigerated cooling without any ducts, which makes them a popular choice for older and adobe Santa Fe homes that never had a duct system. Homes with existing ductwork can also use central AC.
Evaporative coolers are cheaper to install and run on electricity but use water. Refrigerated systems cost more upfront and use more power but no water, and deliver steadier comfort. Exact pricing depends on your home, so we provide a free estimate and a flat $99 diagnostic that applies toward any repair.
Swamp coolers use very little electricity but a meaningful amount of water. Refrigerated air uses no water but more electricity. High-efficiency mini-splits have narrowed the energy gap considerably in recent years.
